Imperva to Acquire Distil Networks, the Leader in Bot Management

As an established leader in cybersecurity, Imperva provides our customers the most comprehensive, analyst-recognized application security solution on the market. We are a five-time leader in Gartner’s 2018 Magic Quadrant for Web Application Firewalls (WAF). Our DDoS Protection continues to automatically mitigate the largest volumetric attacks in under three seconds, and is a leader in The Forrester Wave™: DDoS Mitigation Solutions, Q4 2017. Our cutting-edge RASP, a leader in The Forrester New Wave™: Runtime Application Self-Protection (RASP), Q1 2018, sits within applications to autonomously prevent exploits against all known and zero-day vulnerabilities.

Our global footprint and scale put us in the unique position to observe and stop the biggest and most novel application security attacks. Recently, we’ve seen and heard from our customers about the increasing number and complexity of automated bot attacks. It has quickly become one of the most challenging subjects that many security teams face on an hourly basis.

The scary part is that these attacks aren’t getting easier to detect. In fact, attackers are rapidly evolving in scale and sophistication, and continue to vex the most capable detection capabilities deployed by many of the world’s largest organizations.

At Imperva, our goal is to provide the most comprehensive application security solution, which includes industry-leading bot mitigation capabilities. Today, we’re pleased to announce that we’ve signed an agreement to acquire Distil Networks, the global leader in Bot Management.

At a high level, Bot Management solutions classify whether a website visitor is a human or bot. Solutions don’t stop there — some bots can be good, while others can be downright terrible. The better Bot Management solutions can categorize whether a bot is desirable (such as Google’s web indexers), undesirable, such as those buying up newly-released concert tickets for scalpers or scraping real-time pricing data on behalf of e-commerce competitors), or malicious. These malicious bots include those that try to login with your stolen credentials, probe websites looking for vulnerabilities, attempt transactional fraud, and more.

Bot Management solutions enable security and IT teams to mitigate the bot’s attack or activity against applications and APIs. The best solutions can do this accurately, quickly, and at scale while looking through the nuance and complexity posed by attackers.

In this regard, few providers can compare with Distil Networks, who helped pioneer Bot Management and is a recognized leader in The Forrester New Wave™: Bot Management, Q3 2018. According to the report, “Distil Networks excels with robust detection, response, user interface and reporting.” And Forrester VP and Research Director, Amy DeMartine, writes in the New Tech: Bot Management, Q3 2018 report that she believes bot management tools “will become the predominant application defense,” supplanting WAFs.

While Imperva already protects our customers from malicious bots and automated attacks, integrating Distil Networks into our platform will significantly enhance our capabilities. Moreover, our high-capacity global network will inject Distil Networks with more scale, boost its already high detection accuracy, and speed up overall bot mitigation times. Our goal is to provide a single-pane-of-glass view of bots and other attacks for customers.

Combined with the rest of our application security platform, Imperva will now provide customers an integrated single stack solution to protect their applications and APIs, wherever they reside.

Speaking about the deal, Olivier Thonnard, Senior Security Expert at Amadeus, said: “As a customer of both companies, Amadeus sees significant potential in the integration of their know-how and portfolios. Combining these two best-of-breed solutions should make them stronger, and I’m confident this move will be beneficial for Amadeus and our customers.”
